Trade Fair demolition: Why is Afenyo Markin’s structure intact – Victims question

Some victims of the recent demolition at the Ghana Trade Fair site have questioned the motive behind the demolition exercise of their business properties.

They believe that the exercise was politically motivated as they claim that the business property of Member of the Parliament of Ghana for the Effutu constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin was untouched during the demolition exercise at Trade Fair Centre.

When these victims made an appearance at Happy FM’s social and current affairs show, ‘Epa Hoa Daben’, one of them by name, Aliu Sowah stated: “The demolition was pick and choose. You will find out that whilst yours has been demolished, the other is intact. Afenyo Markin’s property was not demolished”.

According to them, they had not received any formal notice of the demolition.

“They always verbally say they will move us without any letter. That is why we have been staying there till now. The court issue was about rent increment and court ruled in favor of us saying that rent control should be involved in receiving of rent payment. Because of this court issue, we haven’t received any letter to tell us to evacuate”, representative of African Aba company, Aliu Sowah added.

When quizzed on the way forward, they made known that they were yet to meet with their lawyers to decide on what step to take.

Other sources reveal however that the board chairman of the Ghana Trade Fair Company Ltd, Daniel McKorley has stated that the demolition was not a political witch hunt but a part of the process to redevelop the Trade Fair Centre in LA.

On Sunday, February 16th, 2020, companies and factories sited around the Ghana Trade Fair Company Ltd were demolished.
