University of Education students go on the rampage

Some students of the University of Education, Winneba, last Saturday night destroyed property worth millions of cedis belonging to the institution and an event manager.

Numbering about 500, the students are said to have damaged the event manager’s entire entertainment equipment and removed some pavement blocks in the school to register their displeasure at a poor entertainment programme.

In the course of the commotion, three of the students were apprehended by the Winneba District Police Command.

They are Dasmani Alhassan-Daugu and Enock Gah, both Level 100 students, and Ransford Brobbey, a Level 300 student.

Brobbey was, however, granted bail upon a request by his father, who claimed that his son was a sickler who could not stand the heat in the police cell.

Brobbey is to report himself to the police today for investigations to begin.

Preliminary investigation

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Winneba District Police Commander, Superintendent Godfrey Tetteh Adjirakor, said the incident took place at the entertainment forecourt of the Professor Anamuah-Mensah Conference Hall in the university.

He said an entertainment programme was organised by the Students Representative Council (SRC) to celebrate the SRC Week.

During the event, Mr Adjirakor said, the students got angry because one of the main artistes invited to perform decided to end his performance within 15 minutes of mounting the stage.

“Infuriated by the act, some of the students are said to have approached the organisers of the programme. Not satisfied with their explanation, the students began to cause confusion and in the process damaged the equipment belonging to the organisers,” he said.

Mr Adjirakor said the organisers could not stop the large number of students from damaging the equipment.

Some of the organisers are said to have quickly fled to avoid being attacked by the students.

After damaging the entertainment equipment, he said, the students turned their anger on school property and started smashing the chairs in the conference room.

 Not entirely satisfied, some of the students are said to have extended their action outside, where they removed some of the pavement blocks and smashed them on the floor.
