News of the demise of celebrated Ghanaian sports broadcaster Christopher Opoku at a ripe age of 43 has left many distraught and gutted and tributes have poured in for him from all over the globe.
Not left out of the tributes are broadcasters of Happy FM who have shared their interactions with him.
Head of Sports at Happy FM, Odiasempa Kwame Oware recounted how upright Christopher was and why his passing on was a big loss to the industry.
“News of Christopher’s demise really hit me hard in the face. His wealth of experience  and aptness is legendary and his loss will be a big blow for the industry.” Odiasempa said.
Moses Antwi Benefo, host of Anopa Bosuo Sports intimates that his close relationship with Christopher revealed him as freedom fighter who couldn’t be compromised.
“Christopher is a top journalist who is not afraid to speak his mind. He cannot be compromised and pushed around. He’s a member of the Freedom Fighters. He has always been a close friend and a colleague. His knowledge in sports is invaluable and he says things as they are. We will miss him dearly.” PJ Mozey said.
Executive producer of Happy Sports, Mac-Paradise Okocha is devastated with Christopher’s passing on but hold that the ace journo has paid his dues to the noble profession.
“I’m devastated at the news which is undoubtedly unpleasant. Christopher Columbus, as I affectionately called him, was an honest and bold character. He never shelved his responsibilities and his boldness was loud. He has paid his dues but God knows best.” Okocha said.
Christopher Opoku was a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and worked as a sports broadcaster notably at Luv FM, Asempa FM, Metro TV and Citi FM.
He rose to become one of Ghana’s most recognizable media faces with his baritone voice and sleek commentary and punditry skills. He was an all-rounder as his write-ups were impeccable and make great reads.
As a journalist, Opoku hosted major international tournaments, including the African Youth Championships hosted (and won) by Ghana in 1999, the Nations Cup organized a year later, and that of 2008.
Christopher Opoku was married to Mrs. Vivian Opoku and had three beautiful daughters namely Dora Nana Ama Botah Opoku, Christabell Mercy Maame Ama Opoku and Constance Paige Nana Adjoa Opoku.
