Educate supporters on COVID-19 safety protocols – GMA charges political parties

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called on political parties to use their platforms to continually drum home the need for their supporters to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, especially during their campaign tours.

According to the association, it said, “our own people have decided not to guard themselves against the COVID-19 pandemic”.

The President of the GMA made this plea stating that Ghanaians are no longer taking the advice of health personnel and experts and believes political parties are best suited to advise Ghanaians regarding COVID-19 safety protocols, especially during this campaign season.

“We’ve had a joint presser with the NCCE to repeat the need for respecting safety protocols but we didn’t see any announcements on it. We’re not out of the woods yet”.

Noting the fear of Ghana not surviving a 2nd wave of the virus and a possible lockdown, Dr. Ankobea appealed to political parties to take time and educate their supporters and the Ghanaian populace whenever they mount stages to conduct their campaigns.

He also suggests politicians take along and distribute face/nose masks to all present at their rallies saying, “The masks are cheaper now”. He said this, in an interview with Samuel Eshun, host of the Happy Morning Show aired on Happy 98.9FM and e.TV Ghana.

The good doctor still pressed on the fact that the GMA and all its affiliates will go on with their COVID-19 education efforts. “We have decided to start a nationwide education on the possible 2nd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic because the country will suffer badly should it hit us”.

With the December 7 polls around the corner, the various political parties have been organizing rallies, health walks and tours around the country.

But the common denominator in all these campaigns, according to reports from Happy 98.9 FM’s regional correspondents show a complete disregard for social distancing with supporters of these parties oblivious to all COVID-19 safety protocols.
