Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare has insisted the improved performance of students who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), especially in the Mathematics paper was not based on merit.

According to him, the students only did record a marginal improvement in Mathematics because of the examination leakages which the West African Examination Council (WAEC) even admitted.

“The preparation for this year’s exam was not as smooth as expected. Peculiar to the performance this year was the Mathematics paper. Given the magnitude of the examination leaks, this could have enhanced their performance”.

Kofi Asare made this known in an interview with Samuel Eshun, host of the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TV Ghana and Happy 98.9 FM.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in 2020 in Ghana.

The results indicate that the results are one of the best in Ghana in recent times.

The provisional results indicate that there were improvements in the performance of candidates in English Language and Mathematics (Core) in 2020 as compared to 2019.

English Language – 48.96% in 2019 to 57.34% in 2020

Mathematics (Core) – 65.31% in 2019 to 65.71% in 2020

But a decline in the performance of candidates in Integrated Science and Social Studies with students in 2020 as compared to 2019 as follows:

*Integrated Science – 63.17% in 2020 to 52.3% in 2020

Social Studies – 75.43 in 2019 to 64.31% in 2020

However, the Council admitted there was a leak minutes before the Core Mathematics paper 2 was written in August this year in addition to a list of a yet-to-be-finalized version of an examiners’ list for the examination.

They explained that the questions were posted on social media platforms after the release of the papers from the WAEC strong rooms.
