A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) communication team, Kwaku Owusu Banahene, has opined that the Government’s decision to allow students to go back to school from January 15th is a rush decision at this time.

He noted that the timing is not favourable as many parts of the world are experiencing a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a panel discussion on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show with Sefa Danquah, he said: “We are now detecting the second wave of the virus. I don’t know why there is a rush. When the kids were at home, no danger was looming. At this critical time that there is a second wave, you are reopening schools from kindergatern. It is very dangerous. Why would you reopen school during a second wave all over the world?”.

In his 21st address to the nation on measures taken by government against COVID-19, President Akufo-Addo announced that all students from kindergarten to Junior High School will return to school on January 15.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) have said that the reopening of pre-tertiary educational institutions across the country, after nine months of closure is a bold decision by government.
According to them, this decision will reduce social vices among the youth.
