President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that plans are being put in place towards the development of a vaccine in the country.

He noted that this action stems from his “determination that we should manufacture vaccines here in Ghana”.

In his 24th address to the nation on measures taken against the COVID-19 pandemic, the President revealed: “A Committee has been established under the Chairmanship of the former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, the world-re nowned scientist, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, which is formulating a concrete plan of action towards vaccine development and manufacturing”.

Meanwhile, Ghana has become the first country to receive 600,000 doses of Astra zeneca vaccines from the WHO’s COVAX facility initiative.

The country hopes to reach a herd immunity by vaccinating at least 20 million of its population.

The President has, however, cautioned that even with the vaccines available in the country, Ghanaians should not abandon the safety protocols put in place for the prevention of the disease.
