State of insecurity in Ghana false - Editor assures Ghanaians

Managing Editor of the Custodian Newspaper, Awudu Mahama, believes that the state of Ghana’s security should not be a cause of worry or concern to Ghanaians.

According to him, while the country has some security issues, it would be completely wrong to conclude that security in the country is in a dire state.

Explaining why some may believe otherwise, he told Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show: “It is true Ghana has security issues but it is not as bad as we think if we compare it to the sub-region. The reason why we are all talking about crime lately is because of how the criminals are so brazen in their activities”.

The editor added that comparing Ghana’s situation to other neighbouring countries, it will be safe to state that Ghana is a peaceful place with no imminent threat.

“All over the sub-region, there are insecurity in some neighbouring countries and there is a spillover. Just look at Mali of late which is insecure in West Africa. So, if we are talking about insecurity in Ghana, we should not over blow it making it seem as though the situation is that bad. When we do that, we create fear and panic in the minds of the public. Look at our recent global peace ranking index, we come 2nd in Africa and 38th among 163 countries in the world”.

He, however, advised that while we enjoy relative peace, there is the need to keep our borders safe and make sure our security issues do not get out of hand.

Armed robbers shot to death a police officer and an eyewitness during a robbery incident involving a bullion van at Adedenkpo, a suburb of James Town in Accra, last week Monday.

In the same week, another bullion van was attacked near Gomoa Dominase in the Central Region. In this incident, however, the bullion van crew managed to escape the attack unhurt.

There have been other cases of robberies and killings reported in other parts of the country.

Some persons have suggested that the bullion van attacks and other daylight robberies recorded in the country in recent times show a failure on the part of the country’s security agencies.
