Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed that the government seeks to commission the National Cathedral on 6th March, 2024.

He made this known during the presentation of the 2021 mid-year budget review in parliament today.

“Mr. Speaker, work on the National Cathedral is progressing speedily, and following the program of the contractors, and with God helping us, the National Cathedral is expected to be officially commissioned on March 6, 2024”, he said.

“Upon completion, the National Cathedral would provide a sacred space for formal religious activities of State and symbolize the enormous contribution of faith to Nation Building”, he added.

The National Cathedral of Ghana is an inter-denominational Christian church proposed by the government in March 2017 to be built as part of the legacy to commemorate the country’s 60th anniversary.

Initial construction of the Cathedral was supposed to commence in April 2020 after the laying of a foundation stone on March 5,2019. However, the construction of the Cathedral was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The work on the construction has, however, resumed.

In accordance with Section 28 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), the Minister for Finance is expected to present the Mid-year Review to Parliament not later than 31st July of each financial year.
