National Chairman of the Association of Ghana Road Contractors, John Afful Junior, has pleaded with the government to pay monies owed to Ghanaian contractors.

He stated that due to the increasing government debt, completing the construction of roads under the Year of Roads project has been difficult.

Speaking to Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he explained: “President Akufo-Addo announced that last year was going to be the Year of Roads. But how much money was allocated to the construction of roads?

Contractors have appealed to the government for payment and yet we have not been paid. We are in August and have still not been paid. So many of the contractors who have been awarded contracts cannot complete the work because of lack of funds”.

He added that most banks refuse to give road contractors loan due to the delay in payment by the government.

John further challenged the government to come out with the information on debt accrued so far in the road sector so that stakeholders can deliberate on the way forward.

“Roads are very important. Unfortunately, we don’t have railways. So, we are appealing to Nana Addo to invest money into the road sector so that the contractors can be paid to construct good roads for us”, he stressed.

Beginning this month, Roads Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah announced that the government has begun the process of paying road contractors across the country as it has sourced about GH₵800 million from the Finance Ministry.

He disclosed that the process started about a month and half months ago.
