Retired police officer and politician, Peter Lanchene Toobu says the arrest of a man of God associated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah proves no one is above the law.

According to him, Ghana for a while now has been deceiving itself about development but that has not been the case. “If the laws don’t work then we are not developing and if the laws must work, the independence and capacity of the Police must be enhanced. The law must not favour anyone too because even the president is not above the law,” he stated.

He repeated that nobody is above the law in the country “and the arrest of Reverend Owusu Bempah is a sign that the Ghana Police Service is working.”

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West Constituency noted that many people have made dangerous statements on both traditional and social media and yet, nothing was done to them. “But now Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah has been made an example.

How can you publicly say you’re going to attack somebody and expect to go scot-free? Why, are laws not working in Ghana? I think if the law is working, we will all be humble and respectful people. Some people are so arrogant because they think they will do wrong and go scot-free but we need to fix that. And I am glad we started with the Owusu Bempah. He will be humbled by the time he is released from remand.”

He commended the Ghana Police for taking swift action against the man of God reiterating the fact that, “the law will forever remain the law. If you twist it today, it’ll be straightened by another.”

Background

Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah of Glorious Word Power Ministries and some three others from his church have been arrested by the police.

They were picked up on Sunday (September 12) for attacking some police officers at his church premises.

A statement dated September 12, signed and issued by the acting Director-General of Police Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Kwesi Ofori named the other three suspects as Michael Boateng, Frederick Ohene and Nathaniel Agyekum.

Two other suspects are on the run and the police are pursuing them.

They have since been detained for further investigations over the “creation and circulation of multiple videos containing threats, the brandishing of a weapon and the assault of some police personnel,” the statement added.

“After critically analysing the said videos and based on intelligence gathered, the police embarked on an operation today Sunday, September 12, 2021, at the premises of the church to arrest the suspects.”

“During the operation, some members of the church believed to have been under the direction of Rev Bempah assaulted some police officers.

The statement said the injured personnel have received medical treatment and are responding to treatment.

It said the suspects are currently in custody and will appear before the court on Monday, September 13, 2021.

“The police strongly cautions the public against any acts that will disturb the peace of the country.
