The General Secretary for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah says anyone left to speak about their work will never speak ill of it and believes the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa is no exception.

She believes Ghanaians should not have expected less from Jean Mensa and statements she recently made in an engagement with members of the ECOWAS Parliament at Winneba.

In an interview on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah, Nana Yaa Jantuah said, “Did you expect her to say she didn’t do a good job at the 2020 elections? She was speaking about herself and I am sure no one speaking about their work will condemn it. Especially speaking in front of an ECOWAS body, she wasn’t going to say she did badly.”

The politician recalling happenings at the 2020 general elections noted, “People died during the elections and when we asked if it was the police or EC responsible for electoral security and we have no answers still. The violence recorded at the polling grounds were not fair. I say no one needs to lose their lives because of an election or politics. It is not worthy to lose your life in a democracy.”

With the official death tally from election 2020 not certain, the politician added, “We still don’t have a tally of the lives lost at the election. Some say 9 lives were lost and others say 7. It is a matter of concern to us. It’s now 10 months after the election and the government is talking about breaking the 8 when we’ve not been able to account for the deaths.”

She believes aside from people dying, others were maimed during the election and the government and EC has still not addressed the issue. She chose to leave the matter with these cases for Ghanaians to decide on whether the EC chairs statement to the ECOWAS team is justified.

Ghana’s EC Chair, Jean Mensa has told members of the ECOWAS Parliament at Winneba that the 2020 election was one of the best the country has engaged in.

“I humbly refer to Ghana’s 2020 elections as historic for the transparency, the credibility, the cost-effectiveness, the high turn-out and the peaceful conduct that characterized it.

“So orderly, so methodical, so calm were the polls on the 7th of December, 2020 that BBC could find no other way to describe our elections than boring,” a statement which has been refuted by the country’s opposition party.

The 2020 General election which was won by President Akufo-Addo was declared and was challenged by his main contender former President John Dramani Mahama at the supreme court.
