The President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Frank Ankobea says he is positive that the state can achieve its goal of vaccinating 20 million Ghanaians by the end of the year.

He, however, noted that this can only be possible if the government is focused on achieving this feat.

Speaking to Happy FM’s Sefah-Danquah on the Happy Morning Show, he shared that his only fear was that the geo-politics surrounding the vaccination could make it difficult for the country to vaccinate the intended number of people.

“We are doing our best as a country but the geo-politics surrounding the vaccines is very serious and that is what is making me hesitant to say we will achieve the 20 million vaccinations of the people. The rich countries have hijacked the vaccine and have gone against the agreement under the COVAX facility that will ensure an equitable distribution of vaccines. Now the WHO has predicted that we may have to live with the COVID till about 2022 before it is cleared.”

He, has however, encouraged the state to ensure that there is a constant supply of the vaccines. “We have a little over two months to go. We just need a regular supply. It is possible although looking at it now, it appears that by the end of the year, we may not be able to achieve that but if we are really focused, we will achieve the vaccination of 20million people,” he added.

Last month, when President Akufo-Addo gave his speech at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, he expressed hope that Ghana will achieve its target of vaccinating 20 million people by the end of the year despite receiving 5 million doses of vaccines so far.

While he did not state how the 20 million target was going to be achieved with three months to end the year, he told the Assembly that Ghana recognized that vaccination is the way to protect populations and revitalize societies.
