The Programme Manager for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kwame Amponsa-Achiano, says the new directive for travels in and out of the country is for the safety of Ghanaians.

Ghana is introducing some of the world’s strictest Covid travel rules, by banning any adult who has not been vaccinated from flying in with effect from Monday, December 13, 2021 without an option to self-isolate.

Ghanaian citizens and residents abroad are exempt for up to two weeks, but will be required to get jabbed upon landing at the airport. Authorities say they are concerned about a surge of infections over the festive period, hence these directives.

All Ghanaians flying out of the country will also need to be fully vaccinated.

Reacting to concerns raised by Ghanaians that this new directive should not be compulsory as it is against the rights and freedoms of the populace, he shared, “When there is a pandemic, all health personnel and departments must come together to protect the citizenry. That is why whenever there is an outbreak of a pandemic investigations and contact tracing take place.”

On his account, these directives have been issued because government feels if it does not protect the people “the virus will spread further and cause a halt on our activities,” he told Raymond Nyamador on the Happy Morning Show.
