Senior Research Fellow at The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Dr. Kofi Bonney says Ghana is currently safe from the rare double infection of COVID-19 and influenza.

He revealed Ghana, fortunately, started its influenza surveillance before the COVID-19 pandemic reach its shores “and in the course of our work we have realized Ghana has not recorded any cases of the double infection of COVID-19 and influenza.”

An unvaccinated, pregnant Israeli woman has the dubious distinction of contracting the country’s first case of “flurona”, simultaneous infection of COVID-19, and the seasonal flu, according to reports.

The unidentified woman with mild symptoms was diagnosed with the dreaded double infection when she arrived last week at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikvah, the Times of Israel said.

According to Dr. Bonney, in such severe cases of ‘flurona’, COVID-19 is likely to overtake the flu and stand alone. “It is however possible for one to be infected with 2 viruses at the same time and Ghana is currently testing for both COVID-19 and the flu and I can say we have not recorded any cases of ‘flurona’.

In an interview on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun, he referred to the current harmattan season as unusual and revealed numerous reported cases of bad flu turned out to be COVID-19 infections.

The medical expert advised the populace to immediately get tested for COVID-19 if they suffer joint and body pains, and fever. “We should get tested to prevent transmitting the virus and stop blaming our conditions on the harmattan because testing is the only sure way of knowing for sure.”

Reports of people being hit with the rare combination of both illnesses first surfaced in the US in the spring of 2020, according to reports.
