The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged teachers to adopt an improved way of negotiating for their demands rather than resorting to strike actions when their requests are not met.
According to him, the school children are the ones who are affected and face the consequence of strike actions and not politicians who are directly in charge of addressing the concerns.
Addressing members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers at their 6th quadrennial national delegates conference at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Otumfuo also called on the government to take prompt action on the demands of teachers.
“Obviously, those who really suffer are the innocent children. I urge you all to focus your minds on the need for an improved way for negotiations and consultations which will minimize, if not eliminate, any recourse to industrial action and the harmful consequences on our children.
“While we will always urge moderation in the face of the national economic realities, we will nonetheless, urge policymakers to ensure that the status of our teachers truly reflect the level of importance we attach to their place in society,” he added.
On several occasions, teachers have resorted to industrial action when government fails to address their grievances on welfare and other entitlement.
This, the teachers claim form the bases for their strike actions which are the only effective language the government understands.
However, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II entreated the teachers to depart from such actions which add nothing to the educational sector.
