Accra Great Olympics Coach Annor Walker has indicated he is not surprised by his striker, Maxwell AbbeyQuaye’s Black Star call-up.

Maxwell Abbey Quaye was among five local players to be named in the Men’s team for the 2021 AFCON.

He believes Maxwell’s determination and efforts has proven to be worthwhile with his debut addition to the national team.

During an interview with Herbert Boakye Yiadom, host of Etv’s ‘Inside The Premier League’, the gaffer said, “I’m not in any way surprised AbbeyQuaye has been included in the Black Star Squad. I was always hopeful and knew he would definitely make the cut. Before the season, he started training very seriously, he was hungry and very determined. So as a father and a coach, I motivated him and told him this season was his year. I saw him among the national team’s strikers and demanded a lot from him, I pushed him to train harder. He usually trains 30-40 mins before and after the team’s training.”

He also mentioned the physical aspect of the player improved and expressed his delight towards the young striker. “We worked more on his speed and the physical aspect of his game. So I can confidently say his inclusion is not a surprise to me. I always wished that for him, he had it and he truly earned it,” he added.

The Great Olympics Coach however admitted the absence of his top striker would obviously affect his squad and has started to take subtly toll on the team. Yet, he trusts his team to put up a strong statement in the Ghana Premier League.

Maxwell Abbey Quaye made his national debut for the Black Stars during the team’s 3-0 defeat in a friendly game against the Algerian National team in Doha.
