SIM card re-registration process frustrating – NPP’s Kafui Amegah

Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress, Alex Akuoko has stated that, the telecos will lose profits drastically if they are unable to make the SIM re-registration exercise a fully digital process.

He believes the registration process should be made seamless to ensure their customers keep their numbers and still use their services. According to him, should the existing system characterized by long queues and hours continue, many Ghanaians will rather lose their numbers than waste time to re-register their SIM cards.

The politician indicated that if Ghanaians refuse to re-register their SIM cards because of their frustrating process, they will no longer purchase data, airtime and other services of their network providers “and this will see the Ghanaian save money and the service provider make loses so I believe it is in their best interest to make the entire process digital.”

During an interview with Sefah-Danquah on Happy98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political show, he said, “the re- registration of the SIM card should fully be completed digitally since the process has already being started online. A period of at least two years should be given to the citizens to complete the registration instead of the limited period given.”

He also urged telecos to create mobile registration centres to compliment the online process. “This will be to help persons who can’t use the online process. I also believe going to your customers instead of them coming to you is a part of customer service and reduce the stress people go though in joining long queues.”

According to him, government and telcos should think the way forward to register all the required targets before the dateline to prevent loses.

Some Ghanaians who are seeking to re-register their SIM cards with the Ghana card are complaining about the excessively long queues they’ve had to endure at the offices of some telecommunication companies.

The situation has worsened since the first working day in 2022.
On social media, many complained about the time spent queuing to re-register their cards because they have to visit the offices of the telcos to give their biometric information.

Some others feel the process is even redundant because they gave out biometric information while registering for the Ghana Card.

The SIM card re-registration began October 1, 2021 in the country which is expected to end by March 31, 2022. This is a mandatory exercise for subscribers of the various networks to re-register their SIM cards as directed by the National Communication Authority.
