Cote d’Ivoire produced the first shock of the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations when they beat defending champions Algeria 3-0 in their opening group C match in Ziguinchor.

Two goals from Abdoulaye Traore and Youssouf Fofana put them on top before a third in the 89th minute by Joel Tiehe sealed their victory.
Algeria were reduced to ten men in the first half when defender Kamel Adjas was sent off. The Algerians were trailing 1-0 at the time. Adjas had been cautioned for a foul after 16 minutes and was shown the red card 12 minutes later for a vicious tackle on Omar Ben Salah.

Ben Salah was taken off on a stretcher, returned briefly but was substituted one minute before half time. In addition to Adjas’s dismissal, three Ivorian players were cautioned –Didier Otokorie, Arsene Hobou and Aka Kouame.
Traore opened the scoring when he was left unmarked to volley in at the far post. Fofana of Monaco added the second with a left-foot shot from 15 metres.
Tiehe eluded the Algerian defence to net the third with a low, diagonal shot
