Blame gov’t for fare increase not GPRTU – David Tamakloe

The Editor-In-Chief of Whatsup News portal, David Tamakloe says it is reasonable for drivers to increase prices of transport fares as taxes and levies in their line of business have risen.

He revealed taxes and import levies on cars have gone up “and any smart and sensible person will have to increase lorry fares to survive. If you chose not to increase fares then it means you don’t want to be in business.”

The editor considers the proposed 30 percent increment in fares by the Private Transport Union as considerate. “The increase is considerable enough and only those using public transport will suffer, but know this is not the fault of drivers but that of government.”

In a panel discussion on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun, he pointed out that with fuel prices increasing, “Anyone criticizing Public Transport Operators for the 30 percent increase in fares is not being reasonable with them.”

David Tamakloe predicted Ghana will suffer more hardships as the increase in fuel prices and ultimately transport fares will have a ripple effect on the economy.

He charged the ruling government to cut down on its expenditure and put an end to the mismanagement of public funds. “Unless this is done, then we are going to see a lot more of such occurrences. This can be a threat to national security so managers of the economy must see this as a wakeup call and do things right.”

Private Commercial Transport operators in Ghana say they will increase fares by 30%.

The group says the action has become necessary to save their transport business from collapsing with the frequent upward adjustments in fuel prices.

“We, the members of the Private Commercial Transport Operators, wish to inform the commuting public of 30% increase in transport fares with immediate effect. Members are directed to implement the increase from tomorrow, 18th February 2022, without further delay,” the group said in a statement.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has however distanced itself from the reported 30 percent increase of transport fares.

The union has said it expects to conclude its negotiations with the government on Monday, February 21, 2022, after which it will officially announce new fares.
