“Parliament is not beyond the scrutiny of Supreme Court” – Prez Akufo-Addo

The National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo (Pablo) has condemned President Akufo-Addo for saying “Parliament is not beyond the scrutiny of the Supreme Court”.

According to him, the President is already being accused of manipulating the Supreme Court “and it would’ve helped if he {President} had kept mute on the issue.”

“Ever since Akufo-Addo became President, the performances of state institutions have turned from good to worse. And I am not the first person saying I strongly believe the executive arm of government is manipulating the courts,” he told Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show.

Pablo mentioned that Parliament is the only organ of government and institution which cannot be manipulated because of the numbers. “The President should have left these comments to lawyers and political analysts to have discussions on rather than to have said anything.”

He alleged the comments of the President and the move of the Supreme Court are because of the e-levy. “They’re doing all these because of the e-levy and nothing else.”

President Akufo-Addo, in an interview on Thursday, said Parliament is not beyond the scrutiny of the Supreme Court.

His comment was after the Apex Court presided over by Justice Jones Dotse ruled that a Deputy Speaker can be counted during the formation of a quorum for Parliamentary decision-making and participate in voting while presiding over the parliamentary business.

According to President Akufo-Addo, “There is nobody in the Ghanaian State that is above the fundamental law of the land. It will lead to the very matter that we have striven so long to avoid – the concentration of unregulated power in our state – we don’t want that. And we brought about this Constitution to allow that to not reoccur.”
