E-levy causing more political damages – Madhi Jibril

Madhi Jibril, a member of the communication team of the opposition National Democratic Congress has bemoaned over the recent court ruling of Justice Abdullai’s case for the interpretation of the right to vote by a presiding Deputy Speaker.

According to him Justice Abdulai’s move to challenge the ruling by the apex court was necessary to settle all doubts.

However, Madhi Jibril attributes the recent legal developments as an agenda to propose the delicate e-levy.

During an argumentative discussion on Happy98.9 FM’s “Epa Hoa Daben” political talk show with Sefah Danquah, the NDC spokesperson opined that the ruling of the court may be conflicting with the constitution of the land.

“The same supreme constitution of the country that is the 1992 constitution has indicated that every power the Speaker wields, the Deputy Speaker has same power once he takes over. That’s from the constitution not in any standing orders. Now because of the issue of e-levy and desperation for numbers by the ruling party, which was neither caused by the Speaker nor the NDC, everything obviously seems to be an agenda to favour the levy,” he said.

Madhi Jibril also echoed that the Deputy Speaker was aware of his responsibility in Parliament should he reside in the Speaker’s absence as he believed that “some works are bigger than the usual works of Bekwai.”

“He agreed to go for Deputy Speaker and he also knew in times of debate, he only needs to weigh the appropriate options and make a ruling. He agreed to that and never consulted his people in Bekwai and with every decision there are consequences,” he stressed.

He further reiterated the mandate of every Member of Parliament to be able to convince Ghanaians to agree on a policy as he urged MPs to go beyond their usual activities to aid the country’s progressive agenda.

“Apart from numbers, it is about the ability to convince people as stated in the Parliamentary processes. NDC did it in 2021 when voting for the Speaker and showed leadership. The NDC was able to convince one NPP member to vote for the NDC. So this means when you’re in power you do beyond the normal work you need to be doing.
