The General Secretary for the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA), Bawa Fusieni, has called for the urgent training of technical delegates for the association ahead of the 2023 Africa Games.

According to him, the country currently has no qualified technical delegate.

He mentioned that the technical delegates coming to supervise the ongoing Confederation of Africa Athletics Championships hosted by Ghana are from Senegal and Benin. Bawa revealed that the competition which was scheduled to start on Thursday, May 19, 2022, had to be postponed to Friday, May 20 because the technical delegate raised certain issues which could have been looked over if they were Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview on Wamputu Sports, Bawa Fusieni said, “We wanted to start the event today but the technical people from Senegal and Benin asked us to start the event tomorrow. So, we were able to do the opening ceremony, he told Odiasempa Kwame Oware.

“If we had our own technical delegate here in Ghana, we could have started the program today. Because it’s an international program they just come and take over. Technically they become in charge of the event.

“It’s very important to have our own technical people. We are hosting the Africa Games next year and since we don’t have we will have foreigners controlling affairs despite hosting the event.

Bawa added that the Ghana Athletics Association has already run level one courses and is calling for support to run the Level Two courses to ensure Ghana gets a technical delegate.
