Member of Parliament for the Kwadaso Constituency, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, has argued the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is currently seeking the survival of the country.

According to him, Ghana seeking help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is in the best interest of citizens.

The government, on July 1, 2022, announced that it had decided to engage the IMF to provide balance of payment support to Ghana as part of a broader effort to quicken the country’s build back, in the face of challenges induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and, recently, the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

The Information Minister said the US$2 billion would help increase the country’s foreign reserves, and make available to the government liquidity to deal with the external debt servicing obligations as well as balance of payment support.

He revealed that there was US$1 billion from the international capital market which is ready for the country to access, but quickly added that this would require parliamentary approval.

“I will plead with Ghanaians to understand that government is saddened by what is happening to us and is just doing all it can to help us survive. Gov’t appointees have had their salaries slashed, fuel coupon for appointees have also been reduced,” he stated in an interview with Sefah-Danquah on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show.

He explained that government is indeed in a tough position, hence its decision to implement the above measures. “Gov’t is in a difficult situation and we want Ghanaians to understand the gov’t so we solve this critical problem.”

The politician urged Ghanaians to support the government on its decision to seek aid from the IMF stating numerous other nations in the sub region are applying for aid from the IMF.
