CAS temporarily lifts match-fixing ban on Asante Kotoko’s Richmond Lamptey

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has temporarily lifted Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey’s match-fixing ban.

Lamptey was granted “provisional measures (stay of execution) against the Ghana Football Association’s decision,” Kotoko said on Friday.

This afternoon, the club through our lawyer Nilo Effori have secured a ruling from CAS granting Richmond Lamptey provisional measures (Stay of Execution) against the decision of the GFA Appeals Committee meaning Lamptey is free to continue his career. pic.twitter.com/FRk1lzdGRu

The Porcupine Warriors went to CAS after exhausting all local options for lifting the long-term ban.

Lamptey, according to the GFA Disciplinary Committee, was involved in the match-fixing scandal that saw AshantiGold and Inter Allies demoted to Division Two League.

The midfielder was handed a 30-month ban.

Lamptey played in the game, which ended 7-0 with an Inter Allies intentionally scoring two own goals. Lamptey was the captain of Allies at the time.

The ban meant Lamptey wouldn’t be available for the upcoming season, but a CAS ruling overturned it.

Lamptey is free to play for Kotoko until the substantive case is heard and decided by CAS.

The 25-year-old signed a three-year contract with Kotoko and helped them win the Ghana Premier League last season.
