Former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Inusah Fuseini, says the government of Ghana is not dedicated to fighting the menace of galamsey.
According to him, the government has supposedly put in place measures to curb illegal mining but they have all failed sadly.
The newly instituted community mining scheme has also been described as a failure because no results are being recorded.
Citing the recent increase in water tariffs as an example, he told Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show, “I don’t see any results from the galamsey fight. The Ghana Water Company Limited recently increased tariffs because the turbidity of water bodies were high. This means they need more to purchase chemicals to purify the water. The community mining fight is not yielding any results. We are not seeing any results because government is showing a halfhearted commitment to fighting galamsey.”
Households and businesses are facing a steep increase in their electricity and water tariffs of 27.15 percent and 21.55 percent respectively, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has said, adding that tariffs will now see adjustments every quarter.
The increment, the Commission said, was necessitated by an unfavourable exchange rate, rising cost of gas for electricity generation and chemicals for water treatment, among others, and will take effect on September 1, 2022.
