Former Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak has cautioned telecommunication networks over attempts to block unregistered SIM cards after September 30, 2022.

According to him the issued deadline for the sim card re-registration process is unwarranted since most Ghanaians have not received their Ghana cards. He described the situation as a mess and blames the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu- Ekuful for lack of “proper stakeholder engagement”.

In an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, Ras Mubarak said, “I only have contract with MTN and not any other institution. I’m only waiting and if I make calls and there are any disruptions with my communication then the one I have a contract with will be taken to the law court to be dealt with.”

“We are where we are because of the stubbornness of the Minister for communications. Her refusal to engage and do the right thing has brought us here. We shouldn’t have been where are today. From the beginning our advises and all we’re neglected. Tomorrow’s deadline is just an unnecessary encumbrance on the good people of Ghana,” he added.

The Executive member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) further called for the resignation of the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation.

“I have said severally that the way she’s going about the communications it will be best to allow her to step down. No matter how rich she is she’s being paid with the tax payer’s money so needs to listen to the concerns of the people. Why have a lot of people received their Ghana card and then for crook reasons you go ahead to give deadlines for sim registration. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Communications Ministry is facing a flood of lawsuits against its determination to block unregistered SIM cards with three days to the September 30 SIM re-registration deadline.

The Sector Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also insists that the date will not be extended and the decision has attracted widespread criticism.
