Former Black Queens and Ghatel Ladies Midfielder, Doreen Awuah has disclosed how choosing football over her education negatively affected her relationship with her parents.

According to her, her parents felt it was a waste of her time to be taking football lessons as a young girl instead of paying attention to her education.

Speaking to Ohene Bampoe Brenya on Happy FM’s Where Are They program, Doreen Awuah recounted how her father tried his possible best to prevent her from achieving her dreams because he did not believe she had a future choosing football.

“Being a footballer was not easy for me. I was refused pair of boots to even take to training so i had to save money given to me as ‘pocket money for school before I was able to purchase one for myself.

“With the pair of boots I bought myself, anytime I returned home from training, my dad would dispose of the boots with his reason being that, I should rather do something else like being a nurse or a doctor other than a footballer”. She sadly recounted.

She also added, “Back then, women playing was nothing to write home about because much attention was not given to women in the sport.

“I really encountered lots of challenges choosing football as a career.

“There was a certain time i was severely beaten by my dad because I skipped some household chores in the name of going to play a football match and till now i still remember that beating”. She laughed.

She however did not rule out her options of becoming a full-time coach in the near future.
