Johnson Asiedu Nketiah beat Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to emerge the new National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, Asiedu Nketiah’s victory has been described as impure. Awudu Mahama of the Custodian Newspaper argues Ofosu Ampofo was dragged in the mud and maligned beyond what he described as an unhealthy contest.

To him, allegations leveled against him (Ofosu Ampofo) by Asiedu Nketiah have left scars and caused irreparable damage to the person of Ofosu Ampofo.

“I think the Chairmanship race was a bit acrimonious. The allegations made against the incumbent was very nasty. Prior to the election some said the level at which Ofosu Ampofo had been maligned was going to lead to his defeat.
Most people and delegates bought into the allegations leveled against Ofosu Ampofo,” he told Samuel Eshun on the Editors’ Take edition of the Happy Morning Show.

According him, everyone would admittedly want achieve their selfish interests one way or the other, but that can affect the entire image of the association they belong to if the methods used are extreme.

Asiedu Nketiah and Ofosu Ampofo are said to have been friends for over 20 years, and many are surprised at the kind of things the former said about the latter to win the election. There are fears Ofosu Ampofo will not be committed as much to the the party now.

The immediate past General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has unseated Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to become the new Chairman of the largest opposition party in Ghana.

Mr Asiedu Nketiah, who vacated the General Secretary role to contest Mr Ampofo polled 5,574 representing 65.17 percent of the valid votes cast to claim a landslide victory at the NDC’s 10th National Delegates Congress held at the Accra Sports stadium.

Mr Ampofo finished second with 2,892 votes representing 33.81 percent in what turned out to be a two-horse race with Nii Armah Ashitey and Samuel Yaw Adusei polling 38 and 52 votes respectively.
