The government of Ghana has given approval for passengers travelling to Ghana to opt for visa-on-arrival waiving the request for prior approval before boarding effective 22nd December 2022 to 15th January 2023.

Prior to this recent directive, passengers who travelled to Ghana on visa-on arrival arrangements were required to submit approval documents to airlines during check-in before they were allowed to board. With the introduction of this temporal waiver, tourists travelling to Ghana between 22nd December 2022 and 15th January 2023 only need a ticket to travel to Africa’s destination of choice this festive season.

In a letter (copy below ) signed by the Minister of Transport; Kwaku Ofori Asiamah and addressed all airlines, the minister entreated the airlines to update their systems to reflect this new arrangement and those responsible for checking –in passengers travelling to Ghana advised not to insist on entry visas prior to their boarding.

It is believed that this initiative is aimed at boosting Ghana’s enhanced tourism sector to attract tourists and patrons to the many events lined up for December and the New Year.

During the “Year of Return” initiative in 2019, a similar arrangement was made and it is believed that, it contributed to the reduction of bottle necks and stresses associated with travelling. With respect to the economic impact of such decisions, the year of return initiative generated $1.9bn into the economy through related activities and a record of 763,545 visits between January and September.

Anticipation for “December in GH” is high among locals, expatriates and persons living outside Ghana. Ghana’s Number 1 entertainment station; YFM has released its list of partnered events this festive season and has been widely publicized to attract the needed attention and patronage. See publication below.

Passengers from ECOWAS countries and other countries with visa free arrangements with Ghana such as Kenya, Barbados, Mauritius, Tanzania, Lesotho and Singapore can however visit Ghana without visas as it has been since such agreements were signed.
