The Editor in Chief of the Custodian newspaper Awudu Mahama, has declared the ongoing Bawku conflict as a possible threat to Ghana.

The Bawku conflict, a persisting conflict between Mamprusis and Kuasis which has left dozens dead has gradually escalated over the years claiming more lives.

“The Bawku conflict has escalated to a war zone between soldiers and civilians.” the Editor made this statement on account of the recent reports of shootings between dispatched soldiers and the inhabitants of the Bawku precinct and added that the matter must be tackled head-on by the state. In an attempt to recall the measures that were put in place to resolve the conflict he stated “Look at the amount of money that we have invested aiming to keep peace in the area, the number of soldiers we have sent over to maintain peace; since the days of ex-President Rawlings till today.”

Speaking to Samuel Eshun on etv’s Happy Morning Show, Awudu Mahama tagged this as a matter of great concern that could have nationwide repercussions such as insecurity in the country. He added that Bawku shares a border with Burkina Faso which have a conflict on their own and could take advantage of the Bawku conflict to extend the chaotic happenings to Ghana.

“It’s a matter of great concern; Bawku is a border town between Ghana and Burkina; people can easily cross over; the rebels in this neighboring country could take advantage of this and bring insecurity into the country.” he opined.
