Hohoe United FC Comms. Dir clarifies Liberty Professionals ‘sale’ reports

Communication’s Director of Hohoe United FC, Paa Kwesi Asare has clarified reports suggesting the Dansoman-based side, Liberty Professionals has been sold and renamed Hohoe United FC.

This comes on the back of reports suggesting the club has been sold to the current Minister for Railways Development and Member of Parliament for Hohoe, John-Peter Amewu.

However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in a letter has approved the name change of Liberty Professionals Football Club to Hohoe United Football Club.

“We acknowledge receipt of a letter from Liberty Professionals Football Club dated June 19, 2023, requesting approval for a change of your club’s name from Liberty Professional Football Club to Hohoe United Football Club,” the GFA said in a letter addressed to the renamed club.

According to Hohoe United FC’s Paa Kwesi Asare, the club has been negotiating a collaboration with the management of Liberty Professionals for more than a year.

“Hohoe United FC has bought the shares of Liberty Professionals FC and merged it into Hohoe United FC. Hohoe United FC has existed for more than twenty years now and has hit rock button. So this is part of initiatives to inspire confidence in Hohoe and bring back that spirit of belongingness in the Hohoe community,” he said on Happy FM.

“In the document of incorporation, we changed the name to Hohoe United FC and we have documents from the GFA to ascertain that information. So as it stands now, Hohoe United FC will be playing in next season’s Division One Zone Three”, he added.

Hohoe United Football Club will now replace Liberty Professionals in Ghana’s Division One League after they successfully acquired Liberty’s slot in the competition.

On Tuesday, Liberty Professionals confirmed the club’s change of business operation, withdrawing from competing at the top level of Ghana’s football and now focusing on being some sort of an “academy”, developing players from grassroots with no focus on qualifying for the top divisions.

The club will compete in Zone 3 of the Division One League, playing their games at the newly constructed 7000-seater Hohoe Stadium.
