Former President John Dramani Mahama has reacted to reports of a theft at the home of Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, and her husband, Mr. Daniel Osei Kuffour, in Abelemkpe, Accra.

Two house helps of Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, are before an Accra Circuit Court, for allegedly stealing monies and items running into millions of Ghana Cedis.

The said monies were allegedly stolen from the couple’s bedroom.

18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei allegedly stole the monies and personal effects of the couple, between the months of July and October 2022.

The first accused, (A1) Patience, also has her current and former boyfriends, as well as her father, being dragged before the same court.

Patience and Sarah (A2) are charged with one count of conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing US$1 million, €300,000 and millions of Ghana cedis.

In a tweet, Mr. Mahama expressed his dismay, stating, “$1m + €300k and millions of GHS in a Ghanaian Minister’s home? Scandalous!!”

He questioned if President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would set a favorable example for other public office holders in his administration by keeping such large quantities of money at home, even if they were obtained legally.

“Even if genuinely acquired, why keep millions of hard currency at home? Will @NAkufoAddo ever set a good example for public office holders in his administration?”

However, Ghanaians are also calling on the Special Prosecutor to take action against Cecilia Abena Dapaah, following the discovery of large sums of money in their residence.

Some Ghanaians, have questioned how the Minister acquired such wealth and maintained a luxurious lifestyle in a country still grappling with poverty and development challenges. They are calling on the President to follow the example of his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, who immediately sacked the then Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah after she was recorded allegedly saying she would stay in politics until she made $1 million.
