Ghanaian long jump athlete, Deborah Acquah, is out of the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest, after she failed to qualify for the finals of the women’s long jump event.

The national record holder needed to leap 6.80m to automatically qualify for the final, or at least finish among the top 12 athletes overall, but her best of three attempts came in at 6.50m, well short of the qualifying mark.

In her first attempt, the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist leapt 6.39m. She then improved to 6.50m in her second attempt, before an underwhelming 6.25m jump in her 3rd and final attempt ended her participation in the competition on the very first day.

It’s a disappointing start to the competition for Team Ghana, who have sent 6 athletes to the competition to compete in 3 events.

Acquah, the only female in the team, also failed to make the final of the event in the 2022 edition in Oregon.

Up next for Team Ghana is the men’s 200m heats on Wednesday, August 23, where James Dadzie and Joseph Paul Amoah will be competing.
