Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli, has made a passionate plea for a thorough review of Ghana’s constitution during his address at the 2023 Asogli Yam Festival.

The revered traditional leader emphasized that any incoming government must take the matter seriously, echoing the efforts initiated during the late Professor Mills’ administration.

In 2009, Ghana’s constitutional review process gained momentum, leading to the formation of a committee that produced a substantial 900-page report. Unfortunately, the process was stalled following the untimely demise of Professor Mills.

Togbe Afede expressed his concerns about the existing constitution, highlighting an excessive concentration of power in the presidency that, in his view, hampers the nation’s ability to combat corruption effectively.

He stated, “Our 1992 Constitution is not helping the fight against corruption. It has given too much power to the president, and until it is changed, we will not see the needed development.”

The Agbogbomefia also pointed out the detrimental impact of this power imbalance on state institutions, including the security services and the judiciary, as they continue to grapple with the abuse of constitutional powers.

Togbe Afede reiterated his call for unity among the nation’s leaders and emphasized the importance of leaders prioritizing the interests of the people over personal gain to transform Ghana’s fortunes. He stated, “If Ghana is all we have, and we have to continue to shine as a bearer of peace, then we all must come together.”

Celebrating two decades of his reign, Togbe Afede outlined his two primary goals as a leader: bringing development to his community and preserving national unity. He commended the progress made in Ho, though he acknowledged the need for addressing infrastructure challenges such as bad roads in the Volta Region.

Focusing on youth empowerment, Togbe Afede announced plans to establish a “Ghana Aviation Training Academy” in the coming months to provide opportunities for the country’s young population.

The 2023 Asogli Yam Festival, held under the theme “20 Years of Selfless and Inspiring Leadership,” featured Oseadeayor Agyeman Badu, the Dormaahene, as the special guest of honour. He praised Togbe Afede for his outspoken leadership and urged all Ghanaians to hold politicians accountable to ensure equitable distribution of the nation’s resources.

Chiefs from the Asante Kingdom sent congratulatory messages to Togbe Afede, encouraging traditional leaders to speak out for societal betterment. Dignitaries, including political leaders and diplomatic heads, extended their best wishes to Togbe Afede on his anniversary.

The grand durbar marked the culmination of three weeks of festivities, which included events such as an anti-corruption day celebration, a summit of Ewe Chiefs from West Africa, and a women’s day celebration. Additionally, a ban on funerals in the municipality throughout the period is set to be lifted in the coming week.
