NDC Youth Wing demands arrest update in UTV invasion case

The Greater Accra Youth Wing of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding a thorough update on the arrests made in response to the upsetting invasion of United Television (UTV) by individuals allegedly connected to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

On the evening of Saturday, October 7, 2023, chaos erupted as a group believed to be NPP loyalists stormed the UTV studio in Accra. Their disruptive actions brought the live late-night entertainment show, “United Showbiz,” to a standstill, prompting concerns over the safety of media personnel and the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.

The NDC swiftly issued a statement, signed by Amorse Amos Blessings, the Greater Accra Regional Youth Organizer, expressing their firm belief that the identities of the alleged perpetrators have been uncovered.

In the statement, the NDC asserted that the invaders were primarily NPP hooligans, including constituency youth organizers from the Greater Accra region, who were purportedly led by their Deputy Regional Youth Organizer, Mandela Wiafe.

The NDC’s statement reads, “Having identified them as agents of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia-led NPP government, we humbly request an update on the action(s) the Police has taken so far to prosecute them since their arrest.”

The NDC’s demand for updates on the arrest and prosecution of the individuals involved reflects a broader concern for the rule of law and the preservation of media freedom in Ghana. As the investigation progresses, stakeholders across the political spectrum are keenly watching to ensure that justice is served and that such incidents are prevented in the future.
