Samuel Atta Akyea, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee overseeing the investigation into a leaked tape involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has defended the committee’s actions and its comprehension of its mandate in a forceful response to claims made by the IGP’s legal counsel.

The legal team representing the IGP had accused the parliamentary committee of overstepping its jurisdiction and mistreating their client, suggesting that the committee members lacked an understanding of their responsibilities.

Mr. Atta Akyea, however, unequivocally rejected these claims and insisted that the committee was fully aware of the scope of its work.

He emphasized the committee’s clear remit and questioned the basis for the allegations.

“That is totally baseless; nobody can educate us about our remit. Our remit is clear, and we understand what we are doing as a committee. So if anybody says we are trying to exceed our remit, in what areas are we trying to exceed our remit?” he questioned.

Mr. Atta Akyea further expressed his disappointment with attempts to dictate the committee’s proceedings. He stated, “Sometimes when people appear before the committee and begin to dictate how we should work, I find it very sad. We try to be very civil and polite, but don’t walk before a committee and tell the committee what you think the committee should do. You think we are dummies and don’t know our left from right. It is unfortunate and unprofessional.”
