Flooding displaces hundreds in Volta Region after Akosombo Dam spillage

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

A torrential downpour has led to widespread flooding in parts of the Volta Region, displacing hundreds of residents, following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam.

The affected areas include the three Tongu Districts and Anlo, where homes and businesses have been submerged, leaving many residents homeless and in desperate need of assistance.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) announced the spillage as a response to a “consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo dam.” This move was seen as a necessary precaution to prevent potential disaster and to manage the increasing water levels in the dam.

While the VRA claims to have duly notified its key stakeholders about the impending spillage, many residents living in close proximity to the river have been caught off guard. They are now scrambling to salvage their belongings as floodwaters continue to rise.

The affected residents are appealing to the government for immediate assistance as they grapple with the loss of their properties and displacement from their homes. Local authorities and humanitarian organizations have been called upon to provide relief to those in need.

The people of the Volta Region are banding together as the situation worsens to help one another during these tough times. In the wake of this unanticipated natural calamity, it is imperative to protect the safety and well-being of the impacted people, for which the government is obliged to offer relief.
