In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Ivorian forward Laurent Pokou, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has introduced the official match ball, aptly named “POKOU.” The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and sportswear brand PUMA jointly presented this iconic ball, marking a significant moment in the lead-up to the tournament’s kickoff on January 13, 2024.

Laurent Pokou, known as a titan of African football, secured his place in history with his remarkable five-goal performance during the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations final, a record that still stands today. This honor pays homage to his enduring legacy.

Erwan, the son of the late Pokou, emotionally unveiled the beautifully designed “POKOU” match ball during the final draw ceremony. This ball not only carries the name of the football legend but also incorporates the colors of the Ivorian flag: white, orange, and green, along with cutting-edge technology to elevate the game.

Erwan expressed his family’s gratitude, stating, “This is an emotional moment for my family. It is a great honor bestowed on my late father who gave his life to Ivorian football, to have the official match ball for a tournament taking place in no other place than Cote d’Ivoire named after him.” He also commended CAF and the Local Organising Committee (COCAN) for their efforts to celebrate sporting heroes and heroines as inspiration for future generations.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, across various cities in Cote d’Ivoire, including Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, San Pedro, and Yamoussoukro.

Laurent Pokou, often referred to as “L’homme d’Asmara,” is a revered figure in Ivorian football history. To honor his contributions, one of the tournament’s match venues in San Pedro has been named the Laurent Pokou Stadium. Pokou’s legendary career included becoming the top scorer in the 1968 and 1970 Africa Cup of Nations, holding the record for 14 goals in the tournament for many years. Although his record was eventually surpassed in 2008, Pokou remains a cherished figure in Ivorian and African football.

Laurent Pokou’s remarkable football journey took him from his debut against Ghana in 1967 to playing for prominent clubs like ASEC Mimosas in Ivory Coast, as well as French sides Stade Rennes and Nancy. He passed away on November 13, 2016, at the age of 69, leaving behind an enduring legacy that continues to inspire the world of football.
