Football Administrator and former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, has called for a comprehensive review of the Black Stars’ bonus structure. Pappoe expressed concern about the current system, suggesting that a reevaluation is necessary to boost both the morale of the players and the management team.

In an interview on Happy FM, Pappoe stated, “Whether it should be a winning bonus or qualification bonus, I believe the bonus structure of the Black Stars should be reviewed. The structure should be done in a way that becomes motivating for the playing body and management as well.”

Bonuses for the Black Stars have been a persistent and contentious issue in Ghana, particularly leading up to major tournaments. Recent discussions have proposed a shift from winning bonuses after every game to a system of qualification bonuses.

In addition to addressing the bonus structure, Pappoe criticized the selection process for the Black Stars, attributing Ghana’s recent struggles to the choices made by the coaching staff. He emphasized the pivotal role of the coach in selecting the right players, implementing effective tactics, and making strategic substitutions.

Pappoe continued, “It boils down to the manager in charge, from selecting the right players, choosing the right tactics, to putting in the right substitutions. If he, the coach, is still the right man for the job, the Ghana Football Association must sit down and assess his performance and see if he is the man to lead the team to the AFCON.”

The Black Stars, under the management of Coach Chris Hughton, have faced scrutiny for their recent performances
The defeat against Comoros marked the third loss in nine games under Coach Chris Hughton, who has drawn twice and won four times.

As Ghana sets its sight on the AFCON tournament scheduled for January and February 2024, the nation hopes for an improved showing after exiting from the group stages in the previous edition.
