Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been designated as acting President in the absence of President Nana Akufo-Addo, as announced by the Presidency in a recent Facebook post.

The Presidency officially declared Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as acting President during President Akufo-Addo’s attendance at the Munich Security Conference in Germany and subsequently at the 37th AU Summit in Ethiopia.

The announcement, made via President Akufo-Addo’s official Facebook handle on February 14, clarified the Vice President’s constitutional role during the President’s temporary absence.

President Akufo-Addo’s itinerary includes significant international engagements aimed at bolstering global security policies and fostering collaboration among African nations.

Before heading to Addis Ababa for the AU Summit, President Akufo-Addo will partake in the Munich Security Conference, a renowned forum for deliberating on international security matters.

The conference’s agenda for 2024 prioritizes reinforcing the rules-based international order and addressing revisionist tendencies, in commemoration of its 60th anniversary.

Accompanying President Akufo-Addo on his diplomatic missions are the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, MP, alongside officials from both the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry.

The AU Summit in Addis Ababa will be themed “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa.” President Akufo-Addo’s agenda at the summit encompasses hosting member states for discussions on education and AU financial institutions, along with providing updates on Ghana’s role as the host of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to return to Ghana on Sunday, February 18, 2024, following the conclusion of his diplomatic duties, whereby Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will resume his regular duties as Vice President of Ghana.
