Hon. Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh took the reins of leadership in Parliament, presiding over proceedings for the first time in the Fourth Republic.

This unprecedented moment unfolded today in the absence of the Speaker, Rt Hon Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, as well as the First Deputy Speaker, Hon Joseph Osei Owusu, and the Second Deputy Speaker, Hon Andrew Amoako Asiamah.

The significance of this event was underscored by the invocation of Standing Order 12(4) of Parliament, which dictates that in the absence of the Speaker and his deputies, the Clerk shall oversee the sitting of the house for the election of a member to preside over proceedings as the Member Presiding.

Following protocol, Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, proposed Hon Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh to assume the presiding role, a motion seconded by Minority Whip Kwame Governs Agbodza.

The smooth application of Standing Order 12(4) to designate Hon Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh as the Presiding Member for the day was hailed as a historic moment by the MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu. He described the event as a testament to the strength of Ghana’s parliamentary democracy.

Expressing gratitude for the confidence placed in him, Hon Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh extended his appreciation to the House for the opportunity to oversee proceedings on this historic occasion.
