ECG targets Finanace Ministry over GHc1m debt

The Ministry of Finance faces the imminent threat of disconnection from the national electricity grid due to an outstanding debt of GHc1 million, sparking concerns about the government’s financial obligations.

Happyghana.com has learned that the Ministry has accrued this significant debt over the course of ten months, consuming electricity without making corresponding payments, resulting in a staggering total of GHc1,025,918.00 owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In addition to the outstanding debt to ECG, the Ministry has reportedly neglected to allocate funds to various municipal and district assemblies to settle their own electricity debts, exacerbating the financial strain on the utility provider.

Sources within ECG have disclosed that the decision to disconnect the Ministry of Finance stems from the need to address the issue at its core and send a clear message to government authorities regarding fiscal responsibility.

In response to the situation, a team from ECG is slated to engage with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Amin Adam, in hopes of reaching a resolution to settling outstanding debt and prevent disconnection.

It has also come to light that ECG is also pursuing Ghana’s Parliament over a separate debt amounting to GHc23 million. The national task force of ECG has signaled its intent to disconnect Parliament if the outstanding debt remains unresolved.
