The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has ignited controversy with allegations that the Ghanaian government intends to spend a staggering amount of US$48 million on operational expenses for the upcoming 13th African Games.

The event is scheduled to take place in Accra from March 5 to March 23, 2024.

The lawmaker took to his social media platforms to expose what he termed as “elephantine, wrongful, and unconscionable” expenditures planned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration.

The intercepted documents, which Ablakwa claims to possess, shed light on the purported allocation of funds for the event, raising eyebrows due to its astronomical figure.

According to Ablakwa, this proposed budget of US$48 million stands apart from the already substantial US$195 million allocated for infrastructure development related to the games.

The intercepted documents allegedly reveal that the operational expenses will be dispersed over 18 days, averaging a daily expenditure of approximately GHS33.4 million, a figure Ablakwa finds alarming given the economic challenges facing the nation.
