Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has disclosed that a staggering two-thirds of Ghana’s employed population is in vulnerable employment.

Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the government’s statistician, unveiled these concerning findings, emphasizing the need for urgent attention to address the challenges faced by the working populace.

Addressing Ghana’s unemployment crisis, which has surged to 14.7 per cent according to the Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey Quarter Three Labour Bulletin, Professor Annim emphasised the severity of the situation, indicating that it might be even more dire than official figures suggest.

He stressed that a significant portion of the employed individuals in Ghana endure precarious employment conditions, with approximately 20,000 people remaining unemployed for seven consecutive quarters, while over 1.3 million have remained jobless in the past six months alone.

Expressing his concerns, Professor Annim urged national discourse to shift towards finding tangible solutions to improve the conditions of employment for the workforce.

He urged policymakers to adopt a multifaceted approach to tackle both unemployment and the vulnerability of jobs, emphasizing the importance of directing attention towards the specific challenges faced by different segments of the population, including tertiary degree holders.
