Ghanaians can expect to pay more for their commute as three major drivers’ unions – Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, Committed Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG) and Transport Operators of Ghana – jointly announced a rise in transport fares.
The unions cited the recent spike in petrol prices as the primary reason for the fare adjustments, which will take effect from Saturday, April 13, 2024. The key points of the announcement are as follows:
- Short distance or intra-city transport fares will see a 15% increase.
- Inter-city or long-distance transport fares will increase by 20%.
- Taxi transport fares will rise by 15%.
- The base fare for short-distance taxi hire services will be increased from GHC 10.00 to GHC 15.00.
In the press release, the unions expressed their concern over the government’s apparent “indifference” towards reducing the prices of petrol, as well as vehicle spare parts and lubricants.
They also noted that the prevailing economic difficulties and other factors are worsening the living conditions of transport owners and drivers, necessitating the need for these fare adjustments.
The unions are urging all Ghanaians to take note of the upcoming fare increases and to cooperate with the transport operators during this challenging period.
