The Ministry of Interior has announced the imposition of a curfew on Sampa Township in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region effective Thursday, April 18, 2024 due to ongoing chieftaincy disputes in the area.
According to a press release, the curfew will run from 4:00 pm to 7:00 am daily until further notice. The decision was made on the advice of the Bono Regional Security Council.
The government has urged chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and all residents of the area to exercise restraint and use non-violent means to address their grievances to ensure peace returns to Sampa Township.
Additionally, a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons has been imposed. The press release states that anyone found violating this ban will be arrested and prosecuted.
Chieftaincy disputes, often rooted in issues of succession and land ownership, have periodically flared up in parts of Ghana, sometimes resulting in violence. The government maintains a policy of dealing with such conflicts through legal processes and dialogue between parties.
