The Ghana Police Service has taken legal action to halt Yvonne Nelson’s upcoming #DumsorMustStop vigil, filing an injunction application at the High Court to stop the demonstration against erratic power supply.

This move follows the Accra Regional Police Command’s earlier request for the organizers to change the protest venue, just days prior.

Actress Yvonne Nelson slated a protest for Saturday, May 25, 2024, to decry the frequent power outages, dubbed ‘dumsor,’ which she claims is severely impacting her business operations. The demonstration, tagged ‘#DumsorMustStop,’ aims to draw attention to the persistent issue and urge authorities to find a lasting solution.

Yvonne Nelson and her team recently held a meeting with the Ghana Police Service to formally notify them of the upcoming protest, as mandated by law. However, the police expressed opposition to the proposed route, citing security concerns. Specifically, they objected to the planned endpoint at Revolution Square, which is in close proximity to the Jubilee House, a designated security zone.
The organizers stood firm on their original plan, setting the stage for a potential showdown with authorities.

The police’s opposition has sparked a new development in the lead-up to the protest.

Invoking the provisions of the Public Order Act, the police have swiftly filed an injunction to stop the protest, and the matter has been expedited for a hearing on May 24, 2024.

The legal move aims to halt the demonstration, and the court’s decision will determine the fate of the protest.
