Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization has assured the public that the rollout of the 5G network will not increase the cost of data in the country.

Government through the Ministryl has announced the impending rollout of the 5G network in the country in the next six months as part of efforts to increase digital connectivity.

Asked on whether the rollout will result in a possible increment of data prices, the Minister said such a thing will not happen but it might even lead to a possible reduction in the prices of data.

“We have launched NextGen InfraCo and this initiative aims to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across the country propelling us to a fully digitized country by 2030.”

“We don’t expect data prices to be increased because of the rollout of the 5G. A different service is to be provided so if you want, you subscribe to it and if you want to enjoy the existing services you do so by the rate set by your network provider,” she said at the press briefing held at the Ministry of Information on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

“I expect because this is a shared infrastructure which reduces the cost for the network operators they will transfer that into better service offering and it may even lead to lowering the cost of delivering that service which can benefit the subscriber,” Ursula Owusu-Ekuful added.
