The Divisional Executive Council of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), National Identification Authority (NIA) division, has declared an indefinite strike starting on June 10, 2024.

This decision follows a council meeting held on May 23, where it was unanimously agreed to proceed with the strike.

The strike was initially set for March 24 but was postponed after intervention by the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations.

In a press statement sighted by Happyghana.com dated June 9, the union explained that the strike was deferred on the condition that the government, represented by the FWSC, and the management of NIA would facilitate negotiations and implement better conditions of service for NIA staff. However, the government has not demonstrated good faith in the negotiation process.

The statement, signed by Council Secretary Kwabena Adu Kyeremeh and Council Chairman Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghi, further noted that “the Divisional Executive Council has thus resolved to declare this indefinite strike in response to the increasing agitation of our members over the need to address our poor and demeaning conditions of service.”

As a result, the PSWU announced that all services provided by its members at NIA District offices, Regional offices, Headquarters, and premium centers will be indefinitely suspended, effective Monday, June 10, 2024, until further notice.
